Summerhouse Garden
When John and Antoinette Lambert purchased their 4-hectare property in 2013, it was a wild and unkempt expanse of long grass, blackberry, and invasive weeds. There were no fences, home, trees, or functional sheds. All that stood was a derelict slaughterhouse and two old pig sheds, hinting at the land’s past.
Over the years, with vision, hard work and creativity, the Lamberts have transformed this once-neglected plot into a stunning and sustainable garden retreat. A house was relocated onto the land, and the natural contours of the site were thoughtfully reshaped to create the thriving landscape seen today.
At the heart of the garden stands the old slaughterhouse, now charmingly renamed The Summerhouse. It is currently being restored as guest accommodation, with a commitment to retaining as much of its original character and historical features as possible.
The garden features a harmonious blend of native and exotic plantings, ensuring year-round interest through colour, form, and texture. This rich botanical diversity has also created a welcoming habitat for birdlife, adding to the garden’s sense of serenity and natural balance.
Nestled between two rivers and hidden from the road, the property offers a tranquil, secluded atmosphere that invites rest and reflection. It is entirely off the grid, reflecting the owner’s dedication to living sustainably and minimizing their environmental footprint.

A unique glass and shade houses punctuate the space, providing microclimates for different plant varieties and adding structural interest. The jewel in the garden’s crown is undoubtedly the collection of dahlias. Antoinette is an accomplished competitive grower, and the garden bursts into a spectacular display of blooms during February and March.
