La Dolce Vita

The name says it all…the sweet life. This large semi-rural garden on the outskirts of Masterton unfolds before your eyes and is a peaceful haven for its owners of five years, Ruth and Ross Eggers.

Ruth says the white wisteria that envelopes the pergola near the house is often described by visitors as like a fairyland.

Flowers, formal hedges, lawns – there is plenty of variety and interest. A diverse mix of spring flowers are scattered among the mature trees throughout: camellias, rhododendrons, poppies, peonies, hydrangeas, azaleas and an unusual tree dahlia.

Ruth loves her roses – you’ll find Iceberg near the house, and Pierre de Ronsard softening the archway into the picturesque dell with the wedding gazebo.

Look for collections of earthen pots, sculpture and garden ornaments. Towards the back of the house you’ll find the productive garden – a small orchard and tunnel house. The outlook to the western hills reminded Ruth of Tuscany. She has planted drought tolerant manukas to complement the vista.

And to round off your visit, be sure to look for the duck pond – with resident and visiting ducks enjoying their island sanctuary.
