Ambervilla

Ambervilla is a very measured and constructed space of exactly one acre. It excites you at each turn, every view.

The owner, James Thyne, has completely transformed what was once a much larger space, over the past six years. This has involved assembling an international sculpture collection, thoughtfully located in a series of rooms.

The garden is delineated by a lattice of straight lines and strong planes. The villa is bordered by low formal planting and strong hedging that separates building and garden scape. However, what strikes you immediately, are the two larger than life Sentinels on either side of the verandah steps offering constant surveillance.

Just inside the imposing steel entrance gates runs a rill bound by a series of small spaces defined by pleached Titoki. The pivotal moment in the rill is the crouched figure of Max Pattes Reflection, a squatted form staring into the water with a mixture of concentration and anguish.

A large Corten steel installation directly faces the house, at the same time monolithic and delicate.

The planting palate is restful, with greens and whites predominating. Wedding cake trees ( Cornus) make the layering of the garden all the more evident. For all the strength and structure of steel, there is an overwhelming and contradictory calmness about the space.
