87 Kuratawhiti
This garden combines a delightful getaway from the hustle of everyday life and a welcome private family space, all within a short walk to town.
Paying homage to the history of the cottage, and the original trees planted by the Fisher Family when the section was part of a 40 acre block, gardener Kim Walton has been given total free creative license by the garden owners.
87 Kuratawhiti Street, Greytown
You’ll find a variety of very old trees including plums, figs, and cherries plus an assortment of other trees forming thick private boundaries. The imposing gum at the entrance can be seen anywhere in Greytown and the driveway has been made to fit this icon. You’ll be welcomed by the highly scented Michelia Grandiflora and from there all your senses will be delighted at every turn.
The front gardens have been completely redeveloped and landscaped by Kim, she has done such a tremendous job they look like they could have been there for a century, and are designed to give the owners total privacy.
After a busy day, the back garden provides a solitude of relaxation, peace and tranquillity. The native trees and abundant fruit trees draw plenty of bird life who provide a restful melody at dusk. There are plenty of delicately scented plants to complete the array of calming senses.
Summer days are a dream here, with the custom-built swimming pool right next to the house and a full-size tennis court at the back of the property. The whole section is over 5,000m2 of private landscaped bliss perfect for family living. Lots of inspiration here.
Buxus hedges anchor the formality of the garden and tie in perfectly with the style and age of the cottage, while roses, hydrangeas, tulips, daffodils and native orchids provide a lot of the seasonal colour. There is even a Gastrodia Cooperae, a very rare New Zealand (on the critically threatened list!) being cultivated here.
The garden irrigation is fully automated with water drawn from a bore to ensure the gardens have water all year round. The owners give full creative licence to their expert gardener, and the result is obvious – stunning.
