Whakapuni Station

Debuting in 2022, Whakapuni Station brings an evolution of a 90+ year old garden brought to modern living by Bridget and Andrew Mathewson over the last 15 years. It’s no easy task honouring history while refreshing such a vast space, and in our opinion the Mathewson’s have achieved this in stunning fashion.

The sentinel California Redwoods planted in the 1930’s stand proudly at the entrance way to the station homestead. Also the huge date palm that dominates the front of the family home was planted in the 1960’s and is quite a feature of the station’s history.

In this beautiful example of a country station, the generations of gardeners show through in various sections of the gardens. Bridget has added to this established garden extending the back lawn where an opening in the hornbeam hedge invites you through an avenue of conifer trees and out to the lawns, ha-ha border and pond with wetland planting.

At the edge of the lawn a new area has been formed over the Winter. Bridget has creatively repurposed a former railway beam, transforming it into a charming seat. This newly laid bench offers a peaceful spot to relax and take in the beautiful plantings, with a lovely view back towards the homestead.

The formal gardens include roses, hydrangeas, delphiniums, lavenders and peonies set within borders of buxus and teucrium. Modern topiaries and sculptures are incorporated into the new courtyard landscaping around the house. Clever use of concrete styles, tiles, pebbles and timber provide a visual pleasure and structure to the garden which is sure to inspire.

The new planting is expected to reach maturity in the next 5 years with more formal hedging, topiary and blending of country cottage and traditional English gardens to come. It’s been two more years of growth in this garden and Bridget has not been able to help herself there are new areas in train, and more garden areas planned (we told you we could not wait to see this garden grow!) its an exciting journey with this garden that is going from garden strength to strength.
